Corey Burns takes offense to opponents scoring goals on her defense.

Good thing she’s one of the best players in the state.

With Burns in the back, teams only managed three goals against Loyola, which surrendered a total of five during its 24-1-1 season.

The all-state center back grew up playing forward. It wasn’t until an injury to a club teammate that Burns got the chance to play on the opposite end of the field.

“I was built for more defense,” said the junior Libertyville resident. “I have that physicality needed to win balls from people. I’m willing to go after anybody. I’m not afraid.

“And being a forward in the past, I have a feel of where they are going to go.”

Burns, an Iowa recruit, has been part of the backbone to the program’s best two-year stretch in history.

Last spring, the Ramblers went 24-1-4 and won the team’s first sectional championship. They returned to the sectional final this season, losing 1-0 to New Trier in triple overtime.

Both seasons, the Ramblers captured the championship at the Pepsi Showdown.

In addition to her dominating defense, Burns contributed 11 goals and six assists.

“Aside from that (sectional) defeat, we were a great team, on and off the field,” said Burns, who plays club for FC United. “We’re a very close team, been like that ever since I’ve been on it. Every player is so individually talented.

“It’s an honor to play for Loyola.”
