Hendricks earns academic All-America honor

Carmel alumnus Kevin Hendricks, a senior outfielder for the Benedictine men’s baseball team, was recently named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division III Second Team. The Mundelein native is a management and organizational behavior major. Early in the season, Hendricks was named to the Academic All-District team. After missing all of last season because of injury, Hendricks bounced back to hit .356 with .428 on-base percentage. He scored 37 runs and knocked in 38. Of the nearly two dozen players on the roster for this weekend’s baseball showcase at St. Charles North, few are like Hinsdale Central senior Jacob White. White is not playing travel baseball this summer and has not seriously considered baseball in college. That’s not the case for the rest of his West Suburban Conference teammates at the 16th annual Northwest Suburban Baseball Tournament. They are hoping to attract plenty of interest from college recruiters or major-league scouts Friday and Saturday. After 15 years, the Stevenson Showcase has moved. The brainchild of high school baseball promoter and former Hersey coach Harvey Foster has found a new home. His two-day showcase is officially known as the Northwest Suburban Baseball Tournament, the premier exhibition for Chicago-area high school baseball talent each June. The previous site of the event, Stevenson became so associated as the host that players, college recruiters and major-league scouts simply called it the Stevenson Showcase. New Trier alumna Chelsea Delaney led her Kenyon College women’s softball team to the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament this season for the first time since 2006. The Kenyon Ladies finished the season with a 22-15 record and a 10-9 mark in conference play. Delaney, a Kenilworth native and sophomore third baseman, led her team with eight home runs, double the total of her next closest teammate. She also finished second on the team in batting average (.361), on-base percentage (.445) and slugging percentage (.630). Niles North’s Amina Zukancic intends to play for the Millikin women’s soccer team in the fall, according to a press release from the Division III school in Decatur. Zukancic earned four varsity letters in soccer at Niles North and served as a team captain in 2013. The Skokie resident tallied eight goals as a sophomore and six during her junior season. When the Niles West football team opens its summer camp later this month, coaches and players expect there to be a different vibe around the program. The Wolves are coming off a season in which they went 5-5 and qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2004. Niles West had won just three games in the previous two seasons. CHARLESTON — It stood for 46 years. William Kuhnle’s school record in the 1,600-meter run (4 minutes, 14.3 seconds) had held up since 1967. Niles North’s Micah Beller had been chasing Kuhnle’s school record throughout his senior season and, in the state preliminaries Friday, the University of Michigan recruit broke it. Beller was the third-fastest qualifier that day, running a 4:13.93 to advance to the state finals. Beller finished eighth (4:16.90) in the state Saturday. Thanks to a trio of top-six finishes, Glenbrook South tied for 21st in the team standings at the Class 3A boys track and field state meet Saturday and enjoyed the best day among North Shore schools. Titans seniors Austin Dickholtz and Malcolm Engel finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 400-meter dash at O’Brien Stadium in Charleston. Dickholtz crossed the finish line in 49.92 seconds and Engel finished in 50.16. Classmate Ose Ilenikhena also placed sixth by leaping 23 feet, 1 inch in the long jump. ARLINGTON HEIGHTS — Hinsdale Central was almost perfect — literally — in the three-day IHSA boys tennis state meet that concluded on Saturday at Hersey. The Red Devils claimed their fifth championship in seven years and broke the all-time scoring record with 59 points, one shy of a perfect score. “I couldn’t be more proud of these student athletes,” Hinsdale Central coach John Naisbitt said. “They’re talented tennis players, big-time performers and good people.
