The Indian Community of Niles Township didn’t wait until Jan. 26 to celebrate the major Indian holiday of Republic Day this year.
The 62nd annual Republic Day, one of the most important days in India’s history, was celebrated with music and dance and food Saturday at Fairview South School.
On Jan. 26, 1950, India’s constitution went into effect for the first time as India became a sovereign state.
That date was decreed an annual national holiday in India and has been recognized and celebrated in the country ever since 1950.
The Indian Community of Niles Township celebrates Republic Day on the weekend before the actual holiday out of convenience.
In India, the day will be marked by many celebrations throughout the country and especially in the capital, New Delhi.
There, events begin with a solemn reminder of the sacrifice of the martyrs who died for their country in the freedom movement and the succeeding wars for the country’s sovereignty.
But it soon become a day of joyful celebration.
